Reading chapter five, and six really hit home. I began to have many  flashback as I read because I was relating.  What really interested me hat the United States is the second-largest Spanish-speaking population in the world,  55.6  million people can speak Spanish (woolfolk, p.1890). Growing in a Spanish-speaking household, I can relate to Emergent Literacy and Language Diversity. My parents came to the United States before I was even born.  They both came from Mexico City following the dream of success.Years later, I was born into a family of five. The Struggle is real!!

  I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in 2015. I remember my doctor reviewing the medications with me and giving me instructions on how to test my blood and also encouraged me to adopt a low carbohydrate diet. Although classes were offered for education purposes, at the time I chose not to make it a priority.   At first, I considered doing my paper on the functions of the brain; but then I thought I might change it to how diabetes affected the brain; but as I proceeded to research and read up on it, it dawned on me that I first wanted to educate myself about diabetes and hopefully educate others who could relate.   Honestly, for a long time I didn’t take it seriously, I didn’t feel a sense of urgency to change my lifestyle. Even though, my mom had it too, it didn’t change my reaction. I figured it was age-related and I just had to learn to live with it. WOW, as I read the story "The late Paper," it took me back to the year  2002. It really freaked me out because it was like  I was reading my own story. This is exactly what happened to me when I decided to go back to school. My ex-husband accused me of having an affair at Northeastern.  I remember not wanting male partners when we would do our group assignment.  The thought and  fear of my husband finding out and assuming anything would worry me. Then it happened- the teacher decided to put us in groups, and of course, were male classmates in my group. We had to meet once a week and discuss what we had researched. My husband found out because he found emails exchanging class information.  It turned ugly, but besides the situation, we received an "A" on our project. I still and always remember that special assignment.
